The Italian harvesting of the Hayward kiwi started later than usual, especially in the northern regions. The temperature was higher than the average in October, thus preventing the increase of sugar levels in the fruits. The average size is bigger than we expected. This is caused by the fact that plants have fewer fruits. FreshPlaza collected this analysis by an expert in the field.
The bad climate conditions recently experienced in several productive regions will result in a downgrading of the produce, caused by the fruit damages.
Further, numerous death and disease situations will reduce the expected total production.
However, this year’s production is expected to be slightly bigger than the 2017’s one. The produce is of high-quality and the size is remarkable – 90-150 g. per fruit.
With regard to the yellow kiwi, the production increased compared to 2017 thanks to the larger surfaces devoted to the farming of yellow kiwi varieties. However, in some cases, the yield has been smaller than expected.
The average size is good – definitely bigger than in 2017. The harvesting has already started as well as for the marketing of the SunGold-G3 (Zespri) and the Soreli varieties. Also, the marketing of the Jin Tao variety is about to kick off.
As of now, the Italian production Hayward kiwi is not much demanded by the market. This because off-season produce is still available globally – most of it with the Zespri brand. The pressure coming from the Greek produce is something that Italy needs to be aware of.
On the other hand, there is a good demand for yellow pulp kiwis thanks to the limited Zespri Gold yield coming from New Zealander crops. These are available at high prices in Europe. The Zespri’s offer is very well received by global markets.
Finally, a note on the red kiwi: according to the expert, the first limited quantity will be marketed within the next 2-3 months.
