96.7% of Spanish households consume an average of seven million units of bananas from the Canary Islands (Platano de Canarias) on a daily basis, which generates sales of more than one million kilos each day (more than 400 million per year), which amounts to 800 million euro a year, as reported by the Association of Producers of Platano de Canarias (Asprocan). The producer sector covers around 40% of this demand.
The Platano de Canarias brand is made up of 8,000 producers who create more than 15,000 direct and indirect non-seasonal jobs, and it is one of the most significant Spanish identity image brands.
The market for consumption in restaurants represents 4% of the total volume of fruit sales, which in the case of bananas is estimated at a maximum of 3%. The access to the restaurant and kitchen market, by making this fruit an innovative ingredient, provides a new opportunity for the sector.
