Hans Driessen (BASF) about the Kisy® melon concept:

"Cocktail melons of this size are unique"

Dutch vegetable breeding company, Nunhems, took part in its first Fruit Attraction recently under the wing of its parent company, BASF. At the fair, among other products, the Kisy easy-to-eat watermelon line was promoted. This is a 'personal sized' watermelon, weighing between 600 and 900 grams.

"This Kisy concept is truly unique. There are other mini watermelons on the market. However, none are in this format and with these easy-to-eat properties", says Hans Driessen. "The Kisy is a seedless watermelon with a nice, thin, dark green skin. Its deep red-colored flesh is easy to eat. It also has a Brix level of 9 to 11."

"It is easy to eat this seedless watermelon with a spoon, as if it were an ice cream sundae. Its easy-to-eat properties also makes it ideal to use for making cocktails in the watermelon, itself. We are, therefore, mainly focusing on the catering sector. Here, we are positioning this line as a cocktail melon", explains Hans.

"When the weather is nice, you have a melon that looks really good. People are, therefore, prepared to pay more for the added value of a unique cocktail melon such as this. Meanwhile, a Kisy variety has also been developed for the retail sector. Here, the emphasis is on the sturdy, dark green skin. It has a maximum Brix level of 12. This guarantees the sweetness needed for a wonderful eating experience. It is ideal as a healthy, thirst-quenching snack", concludes Hans.
