The time saved by the new Gotthard tunnel is gone already

Freight trains to encounter massive delays

More and more goods travel by rail to Switzerland, or out of this country, with massive delays. "The quality of transalpine transport is not satisfactory and has deteriorated further compared to the first semester of last year," writes the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) in a new report. The basis is the periodic survey of operators transporting containers or entire trucks by rail. They currently state that not even half of the trains are on time. But only a delay of 30 minutes is considered to be 'late'. Every fourth train is more than three hours behind the timetable, with one in nine arriving over twelve hours late.
