Poland: 99% of apples and pears sold by Biedronka are domestic

Biedronka is one of the largest recipients of domestic apples and pears in Poland. Over 72 million kg of apples and pears were bought by customers in 2017, and 99% of these fruits came from 15 suppliers from Mazovia, the Lublin region, Sądecczyzna and Małopolska.

"Jonagold, Szampion and Ligol apples, as well as Lukasówka and Conference pears, are the varieties that are most often chosen by our customers. Our fruits must not only meet high quality requirements, such as adequate maturity or absence of damage, but above all have a unique taste," says Marek Walencik, director of the fruit and vegetable department at Biedronka.

The Polish climate is also favorable for fruit producers, as explained by Paweł Jendrzejczak, co-owner and founder of Agroserw, which has been cooperating with Biedronka since 2002.

"The Polish climate favors the cultivation of apples, as the warm days and cold nights give them a unique quality. For over 16 years, we have been supplying high-quality fruit to Biedronka. Besides apples, we also supply soft fruits, such as strawberries, gooseberries, currants, cherries and blueberries," says Paweł Jendrzejczak. "Our partnership cooperation with Biedronka, which accounts for approximately 75% of our turnover, gives us the opportunity to invest in new technologies and development."

He assures that all fruits are sold in FSC cartons, and plastic wrapping has been replaced by paper to protect fruit in a more environmentally-friendly way.
