China: Asia-Pacific region world leader in mushroom market

The global production volume and consumption volume of mushrooms has steadily increased since 1945. The Asia-Pacific region has a leading position in the global mushroom market with 82.54%. The fast growing North American mushroom production accounts for 11.05%. Mushrooms are particularly popular in China, Korea, and Japan. It is estimated that the global mushroom market will be worth 35.4 billion USD by 2023. That is a composite market growth of 15.31% per year. Apart from this, the dried mushroom market is expected to grow by 14% per year between 2017 and 2023. The medicinal use of mushrooms is also expected to provide extra stimulus for market growth in the next five years.

Mushrooms

Japan is one of the main mushroom producing countries. The Japanese mushroom production volume accounts for 83% of the global mushroom production volume. About 60% of the global mushroom production consists of dried mushroom products. The majority of mushroom farmers worldwide use logs to grow mushrooms, but in the USA, Taiwan, Canada, and Singapore, farmers use a synthetic foundation that stimulates mushroom growth, reduces production time, and increases product quality. Apart from this, reports state that Korea has an annual mushroom production volume of 40 thousand tons, but still needs to import 20 thousand tons from China to satisfy consumer demand.
