"Watermelon" that grows in stone cracks is very tasty"

In the Gobi desert, in Tai county in Gansu province, there's a kind of fruit which, in shape and appearance, looks a lot like a watermelon. In this Gobi desert, with no water for as far as the eye can see, and where temperatures are very high, it's usually impossible to grow any fruit; even grass doesn't survive there. This fruit is a smaller kind of watermelon with big, edible seeds. Locals call it the dune melon or seedy melon.

This melon has an extremely strong vitality. With just a little bit of water it can grow to be healthy and strong. Bearing in mind the abundance of sunshine in the Gobi desert then the melons have really grown very well. The taste of the melon is insipid at first, but after having opened it for five minutes its taste will turn a little sour. Therefore it's only edible for a short period of time, when it's both fresh and tasty and stops one from becoming thirsty. Locals eat the melons by scooping them out with their bare hands.
