"Peru focuses on grape production with better returns"

While, in general terms, the Chinese market has paid low prices for grapes this year, this has allowed for a significant growth of Peruvian grape exports to the United States, so the representative of the association of producers of Peruvian grapes, Provid, rates this season as "a good year." "This price depreciation in the Asian market has been mainly due to oversupply of the Red Globe variety in many producing countries. Given this situation, producers and associations have focused more on the US market, as even though it demands other varieties, it also offers a better price. This season, US sales have surpassed those in China and Hong Kong combined," affirms Carlos Zamorano, representative of the Peruvian association.

Naturally, seeing the development of this market, Peru is focusing on the production of other varieties with better returns. Also, in order to achieve a balance between supply and demand and ensure price stability, the Red Globe is losing its dominant position. "Oversupply of Red Globe grapes and falling prices in China are the reasons why we are gradually reducing our Red Globe production; the variety now accounts for just 68% of the total. While still a high share, the expansion of other varieties has actually reduced it significantly. With a better balance in the production of different varieties we hope demand and prices will both stabilise," continues Zamorano.

"Peru's grape acreage is recording a large growth for the next season. We believe that in the next campaign, which will start in mid-August, there will be an increase in the volume available; it should be better than last year, as last year's production was affected by the high temperatures recorded due to El NiƱo. In any case, we'll continue to work together as a country in order to consolidate our position as reliable suppliers of high quality grapes," concludes the spokesperson of Provid.
