Chocolate oranges becoming increasingly popular

Ten years ago a few brown oranges were found on a Navel tree in the Spanish citrus growing region of Valencia, close to Wilkofruit's office. Because the rest of the tree had normal oranges, they decided to analyse this citrus. The result was amazing, so they decided to inoculate the variety, and that is how the 'Navel Chocolate' that we know today, came to be.

Compared to the normal Navels, this fruit is very sweet, very aromatic, has a low level of acidity, a long shelf life and a high juice content. Wilkofruit started selling this orange a few years ago and every year the orange sells better and better, "When December starts our customers begin asking when we will have more available," says Jan-Willem Ars.

Today Wilkofruit sells this orange exclusively for Europe, except in Germany where the producer has an exclusivity agreement with an important supermarket.
