Jonas Vercammen, grower and trader:

Reasonable prices for all cabbages

The weather is getting colder and the demand for winter vegetables is increasing. Gebroeders Vercammen sees that winter vegetables are doing well on the market, "It is very busy right now. From our own crops we have a nice supply of red cabbage, white cabbage, savoy cabbage and cauliflower. We are getting good prices for all cabbages," says Jonas Vercammen. "Right now cauliflower is going for 70 cents at auction, and we are selling them for 1 Euro on the market."

Cultivating and selling
Gebroeders Vercammen has been active in the cultivation and sale of outdoor grown vegetables for years now. They take care of the distribution side as well, selling their vegetables at home and on the market, "We have a total of 19 acres of land. We are currently reducing our own cultivation. Right now we are mainly growing cabbage, the rest of the vegetables are drawing to a close." The two brothers, Jonas and Matthias Vercammen, grow 25 to 30 different products in Koninghooikt and Berlaar, Belgium. In addition, they buy products from growers and at auction. Market trading is going well, "There is a lot of demand right now for winter vegetables and mushrooms."

The brothers are busy making new plans and investments for next year, "Standing still is going backwards," says Jonas. "We have to move forward. We are going to pay close attention to what we do this winter, so as to be able to plan the most effectively for next year. We may grow more kinds of fruits and vegetables, or we may have larger volumes of certain products. We are still figuring that out."
