US (CA): Strong market for carrots

Strong demand for carrots have made for elevated prices for product coming out of California. That, and lighter yields, have contributed to a strong market that could hold even higher prices in the next few weeks.

“Supplies haven't been where we wanted them,” said Chris Smotherman of Kern Ridge Growers. “Our yields are off and demand is high, so there's a demand exceeds supply market right now.” He noted that the confluence of both factors has contributed to rising prices. He estimated that prices for a 50-pound unit of jumbo carrots has gone up about two dollars over the last two weeks. Prices could also go up in the next few weeks if demand remains unabated.

“The rest of the fresh market seems pretty steady, it's just the jumbos where we're seeing the extra demand,” said Smotherman. “If the change in price doesn't settle demand, then the price will probably go up again next week.”
