Spain: Catalan cooperatives confirm good performance of stonefruit exports

The president of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC), Ramón Sarroca, stressed the good performance of the exports of fruits such as the peach, nectarine and flat peach during this summer campaign, which started in Lleida some fifteen or twenty days ago.

Sarroca is also president of Lleida's first degree cooperative Almenar Fruits, member of the Governing Council of Grupo Actel and deputy president of Afrucat, the association that brings together fresh fruit producers and marketers in Catalonia, both cooperatives and private traders.

Sarroca stressed that "we continue to expand and to gradually increase our share in the export market," which shows that the sector is "doing a good job."

This, in his opinion, is due to the better quality achieved by growers, "which should help us get the best out of the current campaign."

He remarked that the export of these summer fruits is going well, especially to markets such as the UK and Germany, where Lleida's products are popular for their quality, size and sugar levels.

The good weather has also contributed to achieve this quality, although on the negative side, the president pointed out that sales prices are now lower than a year ago; a circumstance which Sarroca is sure the sector will do its best to overcome.

He mentioned that the production volumes achieved to date are "very good", as there were no adverse weather conditions, at least not widespread, except for a few hectares affected by hail, although he reiterated that prices are slightly lower than last year for these fruit varieties.

"It will not be a super-campaign, but it will be a good one. The fact that a number of new plantations are now becoming productive will also contribute to this," stressed Sarroca.

In any case, he does not hide his fear to possible changes in the weather conditions, which always causes uncertainties.

"We must be careful, because storms have been predicted. We'll see how we finish the week," he said last Tuesday.

Regarding the winter campaign for other fruits, such as pears and apples, he stressed that it is practically finished.

"It had an average start and remained that way until February, but from there onwards and up until recently, the apple and pear seasons improved in terms of prices, which reached more than acceptable levels," he concluded.
