Italy: Satisfying clementine campaign

"It was a positive year for citrus fruit from Puglia because the produce was of good quality and was not damaged by bad weather like the one from Calabria and Basilicata," commented Nicola Giuliano.

"As regards clementines, the campaign is going well and prices, although not exceptional, seem to guarantee a profit."

Giuliano Puglia Fruit produces around 6,000 tonnes of clementines and 3,000 tonnes of oranges each year. These are processed by the company and packed in any type of packaging from 500 grams to 5 kilos.

"95% of our production is destined to retailers. Half of it remains in Italy, 30% is shipped to Russia and the rest goes to Germany. Prices are around €1/kg for clementines and €0.70-0.80 for oranges."

"As regards competition, there are clementines from Spain and oranges from Greece, as these countries tend to lower their prices. This year though grades are not good in Spain, which is then getting produce from Eastern markets," concludes Nicola Giuliano.
