The Mexican state of Michoacan contributes 85% of the national production of avocado as it produced 1,117,338 tonnes, in 105,512 hectares, in 2012. According to a report by SIAP-Sagarpa, this represents a production value of 14,835,697 pesos, the highest production value of agricultural products in the state, thanks to the price levels reached by the product in recent years. 28 states of Mexico produce avocado and Michoacan leads the producers by cultivated area (85%), followed by Jalisco (3.1%), Morelos (2.7%), Nayarit (2.2%), Estado de Mexico (2.19%), Guerrero (1.1%) and Puebla (0.9%), which equates to 97.1% of the total.
The harvested area's average annual growth rate (AAGR) in the last ten years for the state of Michoacán is 33%. This trend is generated by the rural average price's AAGR, which, in the same period of time, increased by 230%.
Avocado production is Michoacan's main economic activity as it generates more than 16,800 permanent jobs per year and more than 70,000 temporary jobs related to the activity, totalling more than 6 million workdays a year and an economic impact of more than 750 million pesos a year (COMA AC, 2012).
