Honduras to sell over U.S. $400 million in bananas

According to a preliminary report issued by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), banana exports will generate more than $400 million by the end of this year, more than 62.9 percent of the export sales of agricultural commodities.

Up until this year's third quarter, the state had revenues of 534.8 million dollars from the export of agricultural goods, 8.6 million more when compared to the period between January and September 2012, when they had received 526.2 million dollars.

In that period of time, banana shipments to the U.S. had generated $336.5 million dollars, 1.8 million down due to a 10.1 percent reduction in international prices.

However, the export volume grew 10.6 percent thanks to an increase in production yields due to the improvement of fertilization and pest control.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), highlighted that there are more opportunities for investment, employment and production in this crop which is the second foreign exchange earner after coffee.

For instance, there has been an increase in the production and exports of the banana sector that has business plans and financing to help them strengthen the productive chains.
