Spain: 22,868 tonnes of onions exported by Castile-La Mancha

Castile-La Mancha's onion producers, associated under PROCECAM, carried out an analysis of the sector's current situation, focusing on production and stock levels, as well as the prospects for the coming campaign. Additionally, two presentations took place at the meeting, one on the future of the CAP 2014-2020, and another about news regarding agricultural insurances for 2014.

According to PROCECAM, Spain's onion production volumes in 2013 will reach 1.2 million tonnes, making it the EU's largest producer. Of the country's total, 65% is grown in Castile-La Mancha.

As for onion exports up to September 2013, the total volume stood at 202,922 tonnes; 9% more than in the same period last year, according to the latest data from the General Directorate of Customs. Their value reached 83 million Euro; 60% more.

By regions, the Region of Valencia is the largest exporter, with 128,858 tonnes, followed by Castile-La Mancha, with 22,868 tonnes, and Andalusia, with 20,301 tonnes.

The main destination for Spanish onions is the United Kingdom, with 70,111 tonnes, followed by Germany, with 56,492 tonnes and France, with 21,408 tonnes.
