Mexico: The avocado from Michoacan leads the Japanese market

The avocado from Michoacan continues to maintain its leadership in the Japanese market, target destination to which a little more than 42,000 tonnes, at a weekly rate of about 935 tonnes, of avocado have been sent this year, stated the specialized portal Infohash.

The site noted that, after the United States, Japan is the second largest destination for avocados from Michoacan. Even though, to date, the fruit shipments to Japan are lower than last year, when a little more than 52,000 tonnes were sent to the country, expectations are that, by the end of the year, the export volume will be very similar to that of the previous year.

The fruit from Michoacan that is sent to the most discerning world market, Japan, is widely accepted as it complies with all the safety and health requirements; essential aspects to which producers, marketers and phytosanitary authorities increasingly pay more attention.

According to the estimates of some producers, in coming years, the export volume to the Japanese market could reach 100,000 tonnes annually.

It is worth noting that more than 102,500 tonnes of avocados have been exported to other international markets, not including the United States, this year. Japan is the fruit's second most important destination, but the avocado from Michoacan also has significant presence in the Central American markets, to which more than 25,500 tonnes have been sent this year, and the Canadian market, to which nearly 28,000 tonnes have been shipped.
