According to data provided by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, in 2011 (the most recent year in FAO's data) The Netherlands purchased a total of 29,409 tonnes of watermelons from Spain at an average price of 0.41 Euro per kilo, after which they re-exported them (as the country's watermelon production is quite insignificant) at an average of 0.74 Euro per kilo; almost double the price.
During the said year, Mexico was the world's largest watermelon exporter, with a total volume of 541,885 tonnes, followed by Spain with 418,471 tonnes and Iran, which was the third largest exporter with 334,248 tonnes of watermelons.
In fourth place we have the United States with 207,461 tonnes, followed by Vietnam with a total of 194,085 tonnes, Italy with 156,706, Greece with 106,404, The Netherlands with 69,242, Macedonia with 54,603 and Saudi Arabia, in tenth position, with 53,028 tonnes of watermelons exported.
