"John van Duivenbode: "This product becomes more exclusive every year"

Junior Fruit has Florida grapefruit again

The Florida grapefruit season has started at Junior Fruit again. "This year we will once again market the brand Premier. We always start a little later than the season, as the first loads are usually damaged by heat. In agreement with the supplier we want to start the season with the best grapefruit from the region Indian River. This is where the best Florida Grapefruit originally comes from, packaged by our trusted supplier Premier," says John van Duivenbode enthusiastically. "The Premier brand is fantastic, with an ever constant quality."

"The way it's looking now there will be limited amounts of dark reds available from Florida for the European market this season. This is due to the strict demands from the EG concerning citrus cancer. There will also be few large sizes such as 32 and 36 available as the pre-season was very dry in Florida. There are less volumes available on the whole. There were already less last year, but the volume is set to decrease by another 10% this year. This has to do with the fact that Europe is becoming less attractive as an export country. They are exporting more to Japan, Korea and Saudi-Arabia."

High prices

"Due to the limited availability the prices are high and are expected to remain this way, especially for the large sizes," says John. "Compared to last year there are 20% less large sizes available. The larger sizes tend to go to Eastern European countries like Poland and Russia. Holland and Belgium usually demand 56's and 40/48's mainly go to France and Germany."

According to John the Florida grapefruit is the only real edible grapefruit around. "And it's becoming more exclusive every year. The consumption of grapefruit has been going down in recent years because there is more and more grapefruit from different countries that doesn't taste good."
