Italy: Increase in cauliflower crops could damage the market

"The Italian broccoli and cauliflower market is very calm at the moment, whereas sales of Roman cauliflower are at a standstill because of quality problems due to the weather. Warm temperatures and rain affected the production of brassicas in general," says Stefano Calevi, sales manager for F.lli. Calevi A. & S. (Alberto and Stefano).

The company, located in Viterbo (Lazio), is specialised in the production of cauliflowers, cabbages, broccoli and melons.

"As far as we know, seed companies sold 30% more cauliflower seeds this year. A lot of investments were made in Puglia, were new crops were organised. This was because of the relatively good prices of last year, but I doubt that a larger offer will lead to interesting prices."

According to Stefano, a lot will depend on the weather: "it will depend on temperatures, for example if it is cold, harvests will be spaced out and surpluses will be avoided. Consumption would also benefit this."

White cauliflower.

The main market for the company is the domestic one: "90% of the product is sold to retailers, and we do not work abroad any more. We used to ship produce to Hungary but we stopped because they need large volumes and payments are not always reliable."

This is why the company will no longer be an exhibitor in Berlin and will only take part to Macfrut.

The season will go on until 15th April, then, during summer (25th July - 5th September) the produce will come from the Fucino Plain (Abruzzo).
