Mexico will export 520,000 tons of avocadoes to the U.S.

According to a press release by the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers of Michoacán (APEAM), the guild still expects to harvest 680,000 metric tons of avocadoes in Michoacan and export about 520,000 tons to the United States in the 2013-2014 season."

Thus, Eduardo Serena, APEAM's marketing director, explained how the season has developed so far and their short-term plans.

"The current export season, which goes from 2013 to 2014, started on the first week of July 2013 and, so far, Mexico has exported about 125,000 tons to the U.S. market," he said.

Mr. Serena also added that the season was running its normal course, supplying the U.S. market and meeting the demands of importers and consumers.

"We are currently supplying and consistently meeting the demands of all U.S. importers with excellent quality fruit, with all the calibre variety that they are demanding and we are working very closely with them," he said.

Asked about his plans for promoting the fruit in the U.S., Serena said they are making efforts to better position the product.

"We are making important investment efforts through Avocados From Mexico Inc., in everything that is promotion in the U.S. and we are supporting the entire Mexican avocado distribution chain to improve their conditions when they sell and place their product for the consumers," he said.

"We are helping them to improve consumer traffic to stores and supermarkets which in turn is helping the fruit to constantly flow from the orchards in Michoacan to the table of consumers here in the U.S.," he added.

Finally, regarding promotions related to the upcoming holidays, Serena said they were working on various campaigns and making alliances for the various upcoming events.
