A small crop and high prices: is expected this year for onions. The German Association of Country Folk reports that the onion harvest is smaller than previous years due to the heavy rainfall. "In lower Saxony, growers harvested about 10% less", said Wolfgang Wrede from cooperative RWG.
Throughout Germany supplies by 1st October stood at 186.500 ton, 17% lower than last year although the cultivation area has increased by 3%. In addition, the wet weather has delayed the onion growth and the last harvest by three to four weeks.
Nevertheless, people are satisfied, for the small amount has had its effect on the price. Compared to last year, prices have more than doubled.
