Salvatore Aglieco

Italy: Quality Sicilan green beans, but strong competition from North Africa

Aglieco is a company specialising in the cultivation of vegetables and lemons managed by Salvatore (in the photos) along side his children Sebastiano, Angela and Lidia.

The Aglieco family predominantly grow potatoes and green beans but in addition to this, they also have 100 hectares of lemon orchards.

The production period of green beans is from May to December thanks to the mild climate of the Cassibile area, which is ideal for early and autumn varieties.

"We cultivate 15 hectares of green beans and produce approximately 150 tonnes per year, which we harvest both manually and mechanically."

Aglieco grows the Valentino, Sibarys, Maestrale and 1541 varieties.

"At the moment, the quality is excellent, thanks to high temperatures, but the market is stale. Also, there is a lot of produce from Egypt and Morocco making prices drop considerably," explains Salvatore.

Green beans are sold loose and in bins to the local markets in Catania, Palermo and Siracusa and through the Giorgini Vittorio company in the North.
