The warm weather in September and October has influenced people's consumption and buying behaviour. "Compared to last year, there has been increased demand for dates, figs, nuts and dried fruit," said Laurent La Morella of Lorre (Bingonuts). "It all started slowly during the warm weather. Since this week, however there has been more uptake, possibly due to the 'lower' temperatures, the decrease in summer fruit and also through the beautiful harvest of figs and dates."
Price increase
"Whole hazelnuts have already started and walnuts will soon follow," said the trader. "In terms of prices we are on the same level as last year with the dried fruit. However, there has been a general price increase in the nuts. The prices for pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and pecans has gone up. This also affects the price on the mixes we prepare where these products are used. Also sultanas do not escape this increase due to their scarcity."
Fall of Chilean walnuts, cashews and peanuts
Currently Lorre NV offer various dried products from Thailand such as pineapple, papaya and mango. "There is also a visible price rise here due to the increase in import duty. There are also products which have fallen in price, for example Chilean walnuts, cashew nuts and peanuts. Expectation for the coming weeks is rosy due to the arrival of deglet nour dates from Tunisia. Everyone can enjoy this wonderful product whatever the weather," concludes Laurent.
