A new counterseasonal product from ZSeeds

Italy: Still time for a mini-watermelon?

ZSeeds, a successful protagonist in the mini-watermelon sector over the past 10 years with MONACO - early, forced and semi-forced productions - and CHICAGO - ideal for summer - is now launching a new product.

This is "150°", a mini-watermelon with few seeds, red, crunchy and very sweet flesh with no fibres, ideal for open field cultivation. Fruits weigh 2-2.5 kg on average (according to the period, density and nutrition and irrigation techniques).

The managers state, "We were able to check the latest production of 150° mini-watermelons in open fields of the Licata/Pachino area (Sicily). Despite the season, the product was excellent, plants were healthy and vigorous and yields seemed interesting."

The 150° hybrid is a very early variety characterised by round-oval fruits with a shiny green rind which is not very thick, but at the same time poses no cracking problems. The flesh is deep red, with an excellent texture and high Brix levels.

"After having successfully tested it during the past two years both during the early and late periods, we feel 150° could also work for those companies wishing to try late varieties before fruit from South America arrives (e.g. Brazilian produce from mid-October)."
