This month marks the start of walnut season in Romania. Though fresh product becomes available this month, supplies can be found on the European market throughout the year.
“The season for walnuts starts in October, but you can find them on the market all year round, depending on storing conditions,” said Alina Seceanu of Romaldo. She emphasized the importance of proper storing conditions, that can affect the quality of the walnut kernels later in the season.
“The humidity of walnut kernels is higher at the beginning of the season and they must be dried before sale,” said Seceanu. “Otherwise, they will become stale.” Romaldo provides walnut kernels for the European market from supplies secured from Romanian growers. They've been shipping walnuts to the European Union since 2002, and their annual volume of walnut kernels shipped is 500 tons. They provide their product for wholesalers, supermarkets and bakeries in 9 and 10 kilogram carton boxes. Their main markets include Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Greece, Serbia, Slovakia and Germany.
