SVM is working with the Yunnan Red Pear Science and Technology Company in the initial production trials in China. The Yunnan Red Pear Company was at the forefront of the development of the Yunnan Red Pear, which started around 15 years ago, and its Managing Director Mrs. Shu Qun, says she’s very excited by what she is seeing with Papple. “The taste and texture is excellent and the colour is certainly eye-catching,” she says. “The variety has the added benefit that is does not appear to need bagging which is a critical issue given cost and labour pressures in Chinese orchards. I am excited by this new pear and see it as the start of the next generation of red pears here in China. It is an improvement on the already successful Yunnan Red Pear.”
As pointed out by John Morton, Chief Operating Officer of AIGN® and John Morton Limited in New Zealand as well as a SVM representative, says that AIGN will develop the Papple® brand in a coordinated international manner. This it will accomplish through its international representatives and China will be a key part of this process.
“We are in discussion with a number of potential partners (industry, production and marketing) in China,” Morton says. “The positive aspects of the variety are well understood in this market and we anticipate strong demand for it.”
Papple®, or the PremP109 pear is one of a number of red skin interspecific pears which are now being introduced and undergoing production and market evaluation in China. The Papple name was coined in the United Kingdom and is a combination of the name Pear (texture, flavor and juice) and the shape of an apple.
In addition to its relationship with new products like Papple, SVM cooperates closely with a number of research institutions and commercial entities in China.
