Banana producers visit German island Langeoog

The German island Langeoog was officially named a fairtrade island by Fairtrade Germany. This title drew guests from Ecuador last month. Rosario Samaniego and Yony Yanzaguano, banana producers from Ecuador, heard about the island and spent the weekend on Langeoog as part of a visit to Germany during the German fairtrade week. They were lead by Arian Rathmann of Banafair, who did a six month internship in Ecuador beforehand and acted as a translator during the trip.

They visited the island church's world shop and spoke to island minister Torsten Both and Christa Brodtmann, as well as the fairtrade island's partner companies. They met with both Norda Westerkamp of 'Haus Dünenlust' and Michael Recktenwald of hotel Strandeck and panorama restaurant Seekrug. There was enthusiastic information and discussion on the shipping line through which the containers of bananas reach Germany.
The personal contact is very important for the banana producers to see where the bananas go, and to get to know the needs of the German people. At the same time the German customers want to be informed of the processes in the cultivation and transport of the beloved fruits, to further the acceptance of fairtrade products. The annual fairtrade week plays an important role in this.
