Peru: Organic banana production will fall by 20 percent

The producers of organic bananas in the Chira valley are worried as they've lost nearly 20 % of their production, after almost half of their plantations were affected by the red spot and scale plagues.

According to the president of the Association of Small Producers of Organic Banana (CEPIBO), Valentín Ruiz Delgado, although they've managed to control the disease in recent months, organized producers have chosen to work in the re-engineering of the field to prevent this type of threat.

However, he said that the markets to which they export are insured. The contracts with countries like the U.S. stipulate that in an eventual loss of production due to natural causes the number of shipments could be reduced until they were able to successfully recover.

"Hopefully we'll recover our production by the end of February. To do so, we are implementing field care, through ongoing monitoring," he said.
