Delayed harvest can no longer cope with demand

France: Overproduction of melons in Poitou-Charentes

The melon harvest has been delayed by 15 days due to the unfavourable weather conditions in spring. Today there is a large harvest of qualitatively good melons, but which does not match the demand. The consumer has lost interest in the summer fruit.

The result of this mismatch between supply and demand is a declining price and melons that cannot be sold. The price of melons has decreased by 15 cents to 20 cents since the start of August. Many producers see no option other than to destroy the melons.
