Spain: Potato from Burgos harvest season kicks off

This week, the harvest season for the collective brand Potato from Burgos, has kicked off. The potatoes, which will be stored in controlled-temperature chambers, will not be sold until the period between December and March, when they reach their optimal conditions from a culinary standpoint.

"The brand Potato from Burgos is aimed at clients who are mostly interested in the product's culinary qualities and good preservation rather than its outer appearance, maintaining that quality and our prices every season. To this end, we discard any calibres deemed unsuitable to meet those standards, as well as any potatoes failing to pass a series of kitchen tests, whether they are intended to be baked, fried or boiled," explains José Ignacio Velasco, manager of the project.

"We strongly focus on maintaining a stable quality and prices during the Central European season, although to achieve this, a number of strict traceability techniques, both in the fields and warehouses, are needed, as well as greater inspection costs. This way, even if prices are high, we can easily compete."

"At the moment, potato prices are good, but we do not know where they will stand in a few months, when the commercialisation starts."

With a total of four packing plants for a total of approximately 60 hectares, Potatoes from Burgos will be distributed in the domestic market in 4 kilo paper bags, which ensure a good preservation at home. "Now that we are well positioned in the region, our most immediate goal is to aim for a large share of Madrid's market," points out José Ignacio.

Potatoes from Burgos will be promoted at Madrid's Fruit Attraction between 16 and 18 October.
