Spain: New berry campaign to begin in Huelva

In the Andalusian province of Huelva, the production of blueberries and strawberries has become one of the engines for the region's economy, giving direct and indirect employment to thousands of people. Consequently, plenty of money has been invested in infrastructures as well as research and development, turning it into the most advanced producing area in Europe and other continents when it comes to technology.

An example of this development is Agromolinillo S.C.A., with close to 25 million Euro in revenue per year. It is the largest blueberry producer, with more than 300 hectares for this berry, and a pioneer in the search for better quality strawberries, with more than 140 hectares of this really demanded fruit.

"Demand for blueberries keeps growing as more knowledge about its healthy properties comes to light, revealed by doctors and nutrition experts as well as by multiple supermarket promotions," explains Carlos Carvalho Santos, of Agromolinillo's marketing department. "We believe that this fruit has a great future and a long way to go both in Spain and Europe, which are our natural markets," affirms Carlos.

As for strawberries, the company expects the development of the new campaign to be more positive than the previous one, as that was marked by constant problems which resulted in an overall negative balance. Two of the main problems mentioned included the lack of stability in the markets and the weather, which are truly determining factors.

The company will once again visit the most important fair at national level, Fruit Attraction, where it will continue promoting its brands of reference (Hnos. Márquez, Delicias Rojas, Junamar, Agromolinillo and SweetFresh) and sharing its latest advances in the field of hydroponic agriculture, in the case of strawberries.

Furthermore, the firm announced the sale of machinery for citrus handling and processing. "So far, citrus growing has only been a complement for us, although the great specialisation in other products and the development of the latest citrus campaigns, which has not been positive, have led to a reduction in the acreage by up to 43% in 5 years. For this reason, we are looking for buyers for our facilities devoted to citrus."
