Cultivation was reduced to 450 hectares compared to 850 hectares in 2008

Upefruy estimates Uruguayan blueberry production fell 25%

Uruguayan blueberry production fell in this harvest, but prices of exported fruit showed a rebound.

The low production was 25% and was due to weather problems like the excess water and hailstorms, experienced in northern Uruguay. Months before it was expected that total production would be similar to that recorded in the previous campaign. "The harvest will be around the 1.9 million tons, far less than estimated at first," said the president of the Union of Fruit Producers and Exporters (Upefrui), Horacio Ozer Ami. During the previous harvest 2,707 tons were exported. The acreage fell from 850 hectares in 2008 to the current 450 hectares.
