Gran Canaria: 15,000 families live of tomato and cucumber cultivation

The cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers is concentrated on the south of Gran Canaria, where about 15,000 families live from of this agrarian sub-sector. A spokesman from Fedex, the association of producers and exporters, recently mentioned that during last year 155,000 tons of product was exported from here to Europe.

Up to May this year, the end of the season, 137,000 tons of tomatoes and 18,000 tons of cucumbers were exported to the Netherlands and Great Britain. In total in the municipalities of Santa Lucia, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and La Aldea there are 700 HA for tomatoes and 80 HA for cucumbers. Although this season the area of cultivation is 60 HA less, it is hoped that a similar harvest result as in previous years will be obtained, as long as climate conditions are favourable and no plant viruses appear.
