Despite the weather, a dedicated volunteer team of 30 were on hand to pack a retail value of over $100,000 of fresh produce donated by the Ontario Food Terminal wholesale tenants and the OPMA. Each box weighed over 50 pounds and included Potatoes, Carrots, Onions, Beets, Romain lettuce, Cabbage, Mushrooms, Garlic, Lemons, Apples, Clementines, Celery, an English Cucumber, Tomatoes, Radishes, Cranberries, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Peanuts, Real Fruit Gummies and Bananas!
The purpose of Christmas FoodShare is to gather produce community members, produce businesses and students to make a social statement about fighting hunger during the holidays by providing produce boxes to be distributed by Daily Bread Food Bank and other affiliated food bank agencies to families in need the week prior to Christmas. “Not only should folks in need have the right to food during the holidays, we believe everyone deserves fresh great quality produce at Christmas, as well. What Christmas would be complete without yummy mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, beets and sweet potatoes and a great salad to go with it all?” says OPMA president Virginia Zimm.
