Spain: Drop in fresh fruit and veg consumption

The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in Spanish households in September has registered a new decline, falling by 1.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, totalling 686.1 million kilos. This was revealed by the latest data from the Panel of Food Consumption of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment.

For fresh fruit, consumption has dropped by 1.1%, totalling 376.1 million kilos, and for fresh vegetables, there has been a 3.8% drop, with a total of 220 million kilos. Meanwhile, the consumption of fresh potatoes has grown by 3%, reaching 89.4 million kilos.

Expenditure on fruit and vegetables in households in September increased by 2%, totalling 990.2 million Euro. There has been a 3.6% growth in the case of fruits, with 539.6 million Euro, and a 2% increase in the case of vegetables, with 388.6 million Euro, while expenditure on potatoes fell by 11%, down to 62 million Euro.

Looking at the total figures for the period from January to September, the demand stood at 5,911 million kilos, with a year-on-year drop of 3.1%, and expenditure totalled 8,595 million Euro (-0.5%). The consumption of fruit has amounted to 3,257 million kilos (-2.8%) worth 4,663 million Euro (-1.1%), that of vegetables has stood at 1,924 million kilos (-4.3%) worth 3,392 million Euro (+1%) and that of potatoes has reached 730 million kilos (-1.2%) worth 541 million Euro (-4.4%).

The decline in the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in homes is a common trend in 2017 and in September it has been recorded by all vegetables, except for cabbage, and by many fruits, including summer ones, like peaches, with an 8.7% drop in demand, or apricots, with a 15.7% fall.
