China: Durians are getting cheaper

The weather in Malaysia has been very prone to changes recently, it went from rainy to extremely hot. These climate changes have affected the fruit industry. For example, Mustang King Durian sales have dropped significantly and the export to Singapore has been reduced by half. In addition, China's "fruit army" is buying Malaysian durian like crazy.

A lot of small durian sellers are pessimistic: the price fell recently but could rise again in a short while. Chinese customers are so in love with Malaysian durian, that it is likely that Malaysian farmers are going to plant it a lot more.

According to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore, in 2012, Malaysia exported 22,700 tons of durian to Singapore. In 2016, the number dropped to 16,600 tons. The same tendency can also be noted in 2017. In the last 5 years, Malaysian durian exports to Singapore were less than a quarter of five years ago. Malaysia's focus is clearly turning from Singapore to China. The main reason is that the Chinese market is more profitable.
