Season at Wilkofruit begins in earnest

"Demand for Turkish figs increasing annually"

The Turkish fig season began two weeks ago, but is really taking off now. "Production started in Bursa, the largest fig area, this week. This means an increase in volume. The figs are of a good quality - firm with a high brix level", says Jan Willem Arts of Wilkofruit. "In addition, everything is GlobalGAP-certified and the figs meet these high standards."

He admits that there are high expectation for the fig season this year. "We have a good working relationship with Finkum, our long-time partner and Turkish supplier. We get fresh supplies a few time a week." According to Jan, the demand is very high. "This has resulted in high prices, which is normal for the beginning of the season. The most important buyers of these Turkish figs are supermarkets and wholesale companies. We are, in fact, seeing increasing demand for this product."

Peak will be in a few weeks

The Turkish fig season will peak in a few weeks and the product will be available until the end of October. The figs are packaged in standard 1.6 lined boxes and in packed 6 x 4 and 10 x 500's. Weekly prices and programmes are still to be determined. Wilkofruit also imports sultana grapes in 5 and 7 kg packs, and pomegranates from Turkey.
