Smaller yields with better quality for Polish blueberries

Despite expecting a smaller yield, Polish blueberry growers have said that they do expect great quality this season, with much larger, good quality fruit. Agata Małkiewicz, a member of the Polish Berry Cooperative, said that this year's losses from the spring frosts have been estimated between 10-30%.

The main markets for the cooperative are in Europe (UK, Ireland, Germany), but they are expanding their reach in Asia, supplying clients in Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

"This year we plan on sending some shipments to India. We will also participate in Vietfood and Asia Fruit Logistica trade fair, with an intention to enter more markets in the region." said Agata.

"The demand is still growing quite a bit, which is great news, but client requirements are growing as well. Many retailers require not only GlobalGAP and BRC but also ethical and CSR certification, which is very good news for the end consumer, because it reaffirms meeting quality standards during production. At Polish Berry Cooperative we strive to stay one step ahead of the market and we have introduced our own 30-minute standard under which the fruit is pre-cooled within 30 minutes from picking to lock in the freshness and flavour. The standard has been received very favourably on the market." continued Agata.

The company is introducing sealed punnets to the Polish market this year, for their premium “Berry Good” blueberry line. As part of the plans for further expansion into the Asian market, they will also introduce a premium “Berry Good” 18mm+ line in Asia.

"We have invested in new packing equipment and will be able to seal more types of punnets, and print on the film. We invest a lot each year to make sure that we are able to meet our client's needs." concludes Agata.
