Peru: 4 tons of passion fruit for the Netherlands

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, through Sierra Exportadora, is preparing the first shipment of four metric tons of passion fruit from Olmos and Motupe going to the Dutch market at the end of May.

Agricultural authorities met in the Agrarian Agency of Motupe to define the shipment and to coordinate the technical assistance and training for small producers of both districts.

The director of the Agricultural Agency of Lambayeque, engineer Otto Morales, said that after this meeting, the authorities would implement strategies to improve product quality standards and to improve the price of the product, which will benefit producers.

"Passion fruit exports to the Netherlands will start the last week of May, when producers Julio CastaƱeda Carrasco, Guido Becerra Benitez, Juan Rosas Rodriguez, and Job Guevara Luliquez will export 4 metric tons per month," he said.

In 2009 exports of passion fruit juice in Lambayeque increased by 378% over 2008, achieving an export value of 8.7 million dollars, i.e. 46% of total exports nationwide .

In 2010, exports reached 21 million dollars, i.e. 72% of the market share. Between 2009 and 2011 passion fruit juice exports amounted to 46,500,000 dollars.
