Bulgaria: Fruit and veg prices increased by 30-40% during blockade

As a result of the blockade in the Bulgarian-Greek border, fruit and vegetable prices increased by between 30 and 40% in larger retail outlets. The greatest increases were registered by cucumbers and tomatoes, whose prices grew to 1.20 lev (0.61 Euro). According to traders, such increases were expected for duration of the blockade, since the earliest Bulgarian production will hit the market within a month.

According to the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets, the price of cucumbers has risen by over 40% since the start of the year, reaching 2.57 lev (1.32 Euro) per kilo in the wholesale. There has also been an increase in citrus fruit prices. Bananas have become over 15% more expensive and mandarins and lemons have registered increases of 14.17 and 15.46 percent, respectively.
