Schur Star debuts new flexible bags for fresh produce

In its second year with an office in California, Schur Star Packaging Systems is further establishing itself as a provider of packaging machines and flexible bags for the fresh produce industry.

The Schur Star system stands out among other packaging machines with the way different bags size, shape and material structure can be used on the very same piece of equipment. The bags come in a cardboard box and are linked together. Once the machine is running, the bags are automatically pulled into the machine, from where the bags are filled automatically or by hand and ultimately sealed and separated in an enclosed space on the machine, ready for sale to the end user.

“All of the bags are pre-made and linked together so you can run, say, 10,000 bags for potatoes, and then switch to a different box with different bags, and within five minutes you're bagging a different product in a different bag” explained Hans Christian Schur of Schur Star Systems. “In addition we can integrate the Schur Star with all kinds of weighing and sorting equipment and adjust the filling station on the machine to accommodate the customer’s existing equipment.” All of the bags are produced in Schur Star's facility in Oceanside and they are ready to use when delivered.

“With our very short changeover, you can switch between specialty bags with all kinds of attributes,” said Schur. “We're now introducing a net bag, a bag partially made in mesh, which is a nice addition to the many kinds of bags we offer for the fresh produce industry.” Schur also offers bags shaped as a mason jar (see picture), t-shirt bags or bags with dual compartments “We even made a bag shaped as a Christmas tree for a customer in Europe – anything is possible. Our equipment is a versatile solution and simple to operate for the customer, the technology is in our bags”.

“In Europe, we have about 700 of these systems in operation,” said Schur. “2015 was a great year, we managed to get several of the machines installed in the produce industry in the United States. In 2016, we already have several exciting projects on the board for produce applications and will in the coming months launch new innovative solutions for the industry.”
