Fruits and vegetables form the basis in new food pyramid

In the new food pyramid from the Australian non-profit organization 'Nutrition Australia' fruits and vegetables make up the basis of the diet. According to the organization, plant nutrients should make up 70% of the diet. Two servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables should be the new standard.

Grain products sit above the fruit and vegetable layer in the pyramid. Above that layer is a milk and meat/protein layer. The top of the pyramid, the products that should be consumed minimally but still daily, contains healthy fats: good for the heart and the brain. In addition, eat minimal amounts of salt and sugar, drink lots of water and enjoy herbs and spices, the organization advises.

In the old pyramid, from 1999, the bottom is made up of vegetables and grain products. Vegetables, beans, grains, bread, fruit and nuts made up the first layer of the pyramid. Above that you had eggs, fish, milk, chicken, yogurt and cheese products. The top of the pyramid was made up of oil and butter products.

The famous pyramid is also being updated in the Netherlands. It is expected here that the advice will also be to make fruits and vegetables the base of the pyramid.
