Romania: Exotic fruit exports worth 1.9 million Euro

In Romania, exotic fruits are grown only in a handful of greenhouses, but according to statistics, exports reached a value of almost two million Euro last year alone.

Despite the fact that, in Romania, bananas, oranges, mandarins and kiwis are considered exotic fruits, the value of the country's exports is almost on par with that achieved with the shipment of domestically-grown apples, pears or cherries. According to data submitted by the National Statistics Institute, Romania's banana, orange, mandarin and kiwi exports reached a value of 1.9 million Euro.

Meanwhile, Romanian exports of apples, pears, cherries and sour cherries totalled 2.86 million Euro. At the same time, Romanian imports of apples, pears, cherries and sour cherries increased by more than 20% last year, with Romania importing over 71 million kilos of apples, worth over 22 million Euro.

The explanation for these figures, according to Aurel Tanase, General Director of the National Interprofessional Association of Vegetables and Fruits of Romania (Prodcom), is that large volumes of exotic fruits are imported and then re-exported.
