Poland: More imported greenhouse vegetables due to lower prices

Although cucumbers from domestic producers are still available in the Polish market, they are gradually becoming complemented by imports, mostly due to their lower price. Domestic cucumbers are now sold at wholesale for 5.50 to 7 zł per kilo (1.3 to 1.66 Euro), while imported cucumbers range from 4.20 to 5 zł per kilo (0.99 to 1.18 Euro).

Domestic tomato prices, ranging between 2.66 and 4.33 zł per kilo (0.63 to 1.02 Euro) are also about 1.3 times more expensive than imported tomatoes. Other imported vegetables with a growing presence in the Polish wholesale market include peppers, courgettes and aubergines.

Domestic root vegetables and cabbage are plentiful and wholesale prices over the last two weeks have not changed. Carrots register wholesale prices in Bronisze of 0.60 zł per kilo (0.14 Euro), which is about 14% less than last year. Onions, cabbage and potatoes are over 50% cheaper than a year ago, and the average wholesale prices stand at 0.43 zł per kilo of onions (0.10 Euro per kilo; in bags of 10 kg), 0.33 zł per kilo of cabbage (0.08 Euro) and 0.33 zł per kilo of potatoes (bags of 15 kg).

Apple and pear prices are also affected by this downward trend. Most domestic apple varieties are about ½ as cheap as a year ago.
