California's total almond acreage declined again in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year of reduced plantings. The latest standing-acreage survey by Land IQ reports statewide almond acreage at 1,505,997 acres (609,266 hectares), down from 1,525,638 acres (617,350 hectares) in 2024.
The survey estimates 1,401,097 acres (566,785 hectares) of bearing orchards, defined as plantings from 2022 or earlier that are currently in production. This figure includes 19,927 acres (8,063 hectares) regarded as potentially abandoned. Non-bearing acreage, representing orchards planted from 2023 to 2025 and not yet in full production, fell to 104,900 acres (42,460 hectares) compared with 142,306 acres (57,582 hectares) last year.

Orchard removals reached approximately 49,197 acres (19,911 hectares) in 2025, following removals of 66,794 acres (27,033 hectares) in 2024 and 82,958 acres (33,585 hectares) in 2023. Land IQ's methodology combines agronomic data, remote sensing, field verification, and artificial intelligence, with an estimated accuracy of 98.8 per cent.
"Our industry continues to go through a period of contraction in acreage," said Clarice Turner, President and CEO of the Almond Board of California. "The combination of sustained removals, fewer new plantings, and a four-year pattern of decreasing overall acreage reflects structural changes in the California almond sector. At the same time, global demand for California almonds remains strong, and the sector is well-positioned to provide a consistent and stable supply of California almonds around the world."
The standing-acreage survey, produced in partnership with Land IQ, provides map-based analysis of orchard trends, including removals, new plantings, inactive or stressed blocks, and shifts between bearing and non-bearing acreage. The program began in 2018 and is updated regularly.
The Almond Board of California stated that industry stakeholders may review the full report to assess implications for future supply, market dynamics, and orchard investment strategies.
