Blueberries have gained a larger share of the UK fruit market, with some retailers reporting higher sales than apples and pears. The trend reflects long-term investment in berry development and consumer demand shifts.
BerryWorld, a company active in the berry sector for over three decades, has focused on breeding new varieties through its BerryWorld Plus program, established more than 20 years ago. The program aims to deliver varieties that meet requirements in flavour, yield, and sustainability.

This season marks the commercial release of the UK's first home-bred blueberry, BerryWorld Orb®. The variety was selected for attributes including flavour, firmness, and appearance. Orb was recently awarded Tastiest Blueberry at the National Cherry & Soft Fruit Show.
The variety is currently available in the UK market and will continue to be evaluated across growing seasons. Growers and retailers see Orb® as part of the wider strategy to supply both local and imported fruit throughout the year.
As the domestic season concludes, the supply chain is shifting to imports to maintain continuity of blueberries for UK consumers. Orb is expected to return to the market in the next UK production season.
