For Keystone Fruit Marketing, a division of Progressive Produce, apples were the first commodity they took to market. “The first grower it worked with, El Vista Orchards in Fairfield, Pennsylvania, is still a grower partner today,” says Lisa Fetterhoff, director of operations for Keystone.
Currently, Keystone partners with growers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, Michigan and New England to ensure a variety of apples for customers' needs.
Lisa Fetterhoff said for Keystone Fruit Marketing, a division of Progressive Produce, apples were the first commodity the company took to market.
"We get started every year in August with Ginger Golds, which are quickly followed by Gala, Honeycrisp and Macs. We also have an ample supply of Red and Gold Delicious, Ambrosia, Romes, Fuji, Evercrisp and Pink Lady,” says Fetterhoff, adding that the company will have peak supply from November through January.
Fetterhoff says retailers can offer consumers options with bags and loose apples. "If space is tight, occasionally switch up the apple varieties to keep things fresh and exciting," says Fetterhoff, also adding that pairing apples with specialty cheeses in the deli department or featuring a small apple display near checkout may also help apple movement.
