According to Kevin Remen, business environment manager of Tanzania’s Taha Group, banana growers in the northern regions will benefit from the new market for one of their food staple as well as cash crop.
“This is one of the measures taken by the Group to open the export markets for bananas,” Remen said, noting that Kenya was one of the potential markets for the crop. The opening of the market follows a recent meeting of banana stakeholders held in Moshi. There, minister for Agriculture Adolf Mkenda called for deliberate efforts to market the crop locally, regionally and abroad.
The September 25 meeting attracted farmers, producers and other players in the banana value chain as well as the leaders of banana producing districts, notably Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions. The minister said he convened the meeting in order to lay ground on best strategies for improved banana production, now seen as one of the horticultural crops with big potential.
