Onions supplies appear to be rather limited at the moment, especially for bigger grades. "It is indeed quite difficult to find 60/80 onions as often lots do not meet expectations. In addition, as usual there are batches that are still ok and others that present some problems after storage," explain the managers from F.lli Torti S.r.l.
"Our sector has always been like this - rather unpredictable. There were some interested abroad, but we had to renounce to all supply agreements because they required a shelf-life of a month!"
"Prices of Dutch and Austrian golden onions are increasing every week. We only have limited volumes of white onions. Currently quotations for white, red and golden onions hover around €0.36, which is more or less the same of last year."
According to F.lli Torti, the market is definitely going to improve, though "at the moment consumption is low."
